Our commitment
to waste reduction

We reduce waste in our own production process. And we contribute to waste reduction throughout the supply chain, by helping customers and consumers to reduce (food) waste. For example, by using circular packaging materials.

Our ambitions:

  • To reduce our internal food waste to 1% or less of the volume sold
  • To keep unsorted waste below 10% of total waste, to enable recycling
  • To support our customers in reducing/reusing food waste in their operations

Food Waste

The main lever we can pull to reduce food waste is to optimize our own processes and planning. For example, by reducing the volume of products discarded from our warehouses when they pass their sell-by date.

We have already reduced the amount of food waste in our own operations to 1% of the volume sold. We will try to lower this figure further still. After all, every kilogram saved contributes to a lower overall environmental footprint.

At the same time, as much as 25% of food is wasted elsewhere in the supply chain. We have started a joint pilot project with customers to look at ways in which we can contribute to food waste reduction and prevention in bakeries.



Sustainable Packaging

Packaging has a large impact on our environmental footprint. It accounts for nearly all the non-food waste we introduce into the market. To reduce this waste stream, we seek to reduce waste, replace materials with more sustainable alternatives and promote recycling.

We have set ambitious targets for 2025:

  • To replace existing materials with 100% FSC-certified paper & cardboard, when available.

  • To facilitate recycling by using only mono-material packaging, and by ensuring 100% of our packaging provides information on its composition.

  • To stop using aluminum in our packaging

Non-food waste

In our own production processes, we seek to reduce our waste production per kg produced. One fundamental way of doing this is by increasing the percentage of sorted waste, which includes the packaging materials in which our raw materials arrive.

In recent years we have already reduced the percentage of unsorted waste from 18% to 14% of total waste production, and our ambition is to reduce it to less than 10% by 2023.
